Bringing childbirth back to its roots is my ultimate goal. In todays society to have a normal birth has been clouded by modern obstetrics and politics within the National Health System. In turn more and more women are becoming dissatisfied with their care. Having the support and encouragement to do things your way is paramount to your ultimate satisfaction. What is a doula? A doula (pronounced doo-la) is a woman who is experienced in childbirth. They give emotional, physical and practical support to women during pregnancy, labour and in the period following the birth of their baby. Doulas have been in existence since women have been having babies and were originally womens family or members of their community. In the light of recent evidence from numerous studies the benefits of having continuous support in labour has led many women to employ experienced mothers who are knowledgeable about childbirth to support them during their experience. Doulas are employed to provide continuous unconditional support, to listen, to care, to help, to explore options, to discuss steps and to help a woman discover her own strength. Doulas are not associated with the hospital at all, they are employed by you and have only your interests at heart. They do not judge and aim to make your experience of childbirth the greatest experience of your life. What is the evidence for the practice? Continuous support by a known person in labour has many benefits for mothers, fathers and new babies. These include:- ¤ Labours are shorter ¤ There is a 50% less chance of having a ceasarean section ¤ Fewer instrumental deliveries ¤ Higher maternal satisfaction with birth ¤ Helps father participate and feel less anxious ¤ Increases the success with breastfeeding ¤ Decreases incidence of postnatal depression |
